May 5, 2025

On 9 and 10 April 2025, TECHNA took part in NutriForum, the leading Spanish congress dedicated to animal nutrition and feeding, held at the Palacio de Congresos in Lleida. This key event brought together researchers, experts and professionals from the sector to share the latest scientific and technical advances in animal nutrition.

Among the highlights of this year's event were the lectures given by our two specialists, Samia Messaoud and Erwan Le Bras, experts in poultry and pig nutrition respectively.

Optimising turkey growth and performance through appropriate nutritional strategies

In her lecture entitled "Nutritional strategies for turkeys: optimising energy and protein intake to maximise yield and feed efficiency", Samia Messaoud presented the results of a trial conducted at the Euronutrition experimental station in France.

The study looked at the impact of different levels of energy and digestible lysine on the technical performance of male turkeys (Aviagen Premium). The results demonstrate the importance of fine-tuning nutritional intake depending on the rearing phase in order to improve technical and economic performance while reducing the environmental footprint.

The data obtained show in particular that :

  • In the start-up-growth phase (0-56 days), increasing lysine levels improves growth. High energy levels, on the other hand, can reduce growth, through their effect on feed intake.
  • In finishing, the energy concentration of feed reduces consumption and improves feed conversion ratios, while increased lysine improves net yields.
  • The different nutritional strategies tested have an impact on the economic results and competitiveness of the sector.

Samia also emphasised the importance of these nutritional adjustments in reducing the carbon footprint, in line with society's growing expectations in terms of responsible production.

Nutrition and stress management in pig farming, essential levers for competitiveness

Erwan Le Bras, pig expert at TECHNA, spoke on the subject of "Key points for competitiveness in fattening through nutrition and stress management in pig production". His presentation highlighted the importance of considering feed not simply as a cost, but as a genuine strategic investment.

Based on the fact that feed represents up to 65% of the cost of pig production, Erwan explained how TECHNA helps feed manufacturers and farmers to reason their nutritional programmes on the basis of the margin on feed costs, and not just on the price of the ration.

Several areas of work were presented:

  • The impact of lysine levels according to the genotypes used.
  • The integration of economic and genetic data into WEFEED NUTRI and WEFEED CARCASS software to optimise decisions in real time.
  • The role of stress management and animal welfare in boosting performance.

On the subject of stress, TECHNA presented concrete results on the effect of stocking density, the presence of intact tails and the use of additives based on plant extracts to improve pig behaviour. These solutions, which have been put to economic use in the field, show that improved welfare can go hand in hand with better performance and increased profitability.
